ACCOUNTABILITY

As a coach, mentor, trainer, author, and facilitator in my lane in business one of the character traits I expect with every client and others is  “ACCOUNTABILITY.”  What is the definition of this word: ACCOUNTABILITY?

From Merriam-webster.com we find this:

From Cambridge.org we find this:

I remember in the mid-1980’s those engineers who were hired by high tech companies in silicon valley had the following weekly assignment:  Please submit your weekly “Highs and Lows.”  This is and has been a common business practice in all areas of business.

Why?

So an individual can measure their progress to align with the company’s goals, vision and their job description.

WOW!  So much has changed.

In fact this is detrimental to all businesses when they let the “ACCOUNTABILITY” of their employees and they delete job descriptions [how do you know what you are to do if you don’t have a job description?]

If an employee has no direction, when will they know they have completed a vital job to the company their were hired to work for?

If you are a person who disagrees with these definitions, and parameters around being an employee; then my question to you is this:

“Where are you willing to be accountable in all the 12 areas of your life?

  1. Where are you accountable in your home?
  2. Where are you accountable in serving others?
  3. Where are you accountable in family and parenting?
  4. Where are you accountable in your finances?
  5. Where are you accountable in your personal safety?
  6. Where are you accountable in your personal, spiritual, and professional growth?
  7. Where are you accountable with yourself?
  8. Where are you accountable in having fun in your life?
  9. Where are you accountable in your intimate relationships, personal relationships, social relationships and professional relationships?
  10. Where are you accountable in your health/wellness and aging?
  11. Where are you accountable in your spiritual life?
  12. Where are you accountable in your professional life and career?

When an individual begins to drift to go off center in any area of their life, other areas will also follow.  Why do you think this happens?

Drifting happens when we replace that which sustains us with what is typically called “laziness, slothfulness, couch potato and so on.”  This isn’t a condemnation but rather a “wake-up” call for each of us to look at our priorities.  When any one of us is given a handout, we are thankful at first and it will tie us over in the interim until we get back on our feet.

BUT… when we expect it even when we are capable and healthy enough to be accountable for every area of our lives; this is when we begin to stay backslidden, a burden on society as a whole and a state of continual unaccountability.  This should feel “yucky and dishonest.”  Why is that okay with these individuals?

You and I are part of the answer, by uncovering and dishonesty.

What do you think?

Ask yourself this:

Am I stealing from my employer by not being accountable?

Am I lying about my not completing the work assigned to me in my job description?

Am I cheating on my work?

Am I spending time on pornography or sex sites while I am at work?

You are accountable for everything you do while you are on the job and being paid for the time in the office or working from home.

My suggestion is to do a deep “Self-Check” of what you are saying about who you are and what is important to you.

If you are looking for a mentor or coach to help you with your microphone, send me an email, and we can discuss the effective use of that microphone in your hands!
